Joint problems is one of the five cause that the patients visit doctors in Hong Kong; however, rheumatism has been neglected as everyone thinks that rheumatism is geriatrics where old age is bound to suffer, and there is no cure for. Some rheumatic diseases will affect the patient’s skin, and others mistakenly thought to suffer from infectious diseases, and therefore subject to discrimination. In fact, not a year old children may suffer from rheumatism and joint diseases; inflammatory rheumatic joint disease, immune system problems, early treatment can lead to patients with disability, and it costs a big impact to individuals, families and also the society.

Therefore, the Hong Kong Arthritis & Rheumatism Foundation published this book “Know more about Rheumatism” which included an exclusive interview with the doctors, patients and their families to fully explain the types, symptoms and treatment of rheumatism, especially analysis of eight common rheumatic disease, including ankylosing spondylitis (AS), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), osteoarthritis (OA), gout, arthritic diseases in children, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), psoriatic arthritis (PSA), and osteoporosis. A specialty doctor explained in detail the information about the disease and patients shared their stories in each chapter.

There are included: the daughter of Ms Nancy Sit suffered from pediatric rheumatology and Ms Sit shared about the worries as a mother; Mr. Eric Wan suffered from rheumatoid arthritis and his story about not able to work as an action actor due to the illness; Rheumatoid arthritis caused Ms Maria Chung’s life a lot of inconvenience, but it inspired her to cherish family and time.

The book also introduces some of rare rheumatic diseases, such as scleroderma, vasculitis, dermatomyositis and polymyositis. The information of different adjuvant therapy is also provided. The readers can understand drugs, appropriate exercise and change in some minor details of daily life which could help to release the pain and improve the situation.
