Educational Talk – SLE and Osteoporosis was taken part in the HKARF Jockey Club Patient Resource and Training Centre on 6th December 2014. The talk aimed to enhance people’s understanding of SLE and osteoporosis. There were 45 participants in total.

The talk was conducted by Dr. Carrel YU, a specialist in Rheumatology, to explain the definition of osteoporosis. The advantages and limitations of different checking methods were introduced. Functions and principles of apply medications and other treatments were analyzed so that participants could have a better understanding on osteoporosis. Some research suggested SLE patients were at high risk of having osteoporosis as taking steroids would be one of the reasons. Thus, patients should be highly aware of their diet and do exercises properly to prevent osteoporosis. Dr. YU emphasized the importance of balance diet and took coffee as an example. Caffeine was well-known for increasing calcium loss yet it was an effective in keeping up spirits and diuresis. Ingestion of appropriate amount would not have negative effect to the body. Every ingredient had its specific benefits and harm. Blind trust of researches and articles were not recommended.

The talk then followed by a Q&A session where participants actively asked questions. Dr. YU answered with patience to solve their doubts. The audiences found the information from the talk very useful and hoped to participate to the activities in the future. Besides, participants could check their bone density after the Q&A session.
